Mental Health in the Workplace
The focus of My Whole Self day is one of mental health in the workplace.
The question revolves around how much of ourselves we bring to the workplace, or indeed leave at the workplace.
Mental and emotional health is important in the workplace.
Here are ten ways to promote mental and emotional wellbeing:
1. Promote a work/life balance.
2. Encourage employees to take breaks.
3. Promote healthy eating and exercise.
4. Encourage employee self-care.
5. Offer flexible working arrangements.
6. Promote positive thinking and stress management skills.
7. Provide Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs).
8. Encourage open communication among employees.
9. Promote a positive work environment.
10. Celebrate successes!

In 2022 we shouldn't feel like we have to leave parts of our identity behind – be that our cultural or ethnic background, gender identity, sexuality, disability, or health. The My Whole Self campaign is calling on organisations to empower employees to bring their whole self to work and support their own and others’ wellbeing.
In a global study during COVID-19, 89% of employees have said their work-life was getting worse and 85% said their wellbeing declined. (Harvard Business Review, February 2021) Ensuring everyone feels safe and confident to speak up and contribute in the workplace will better support peoples’ mental health. It will also help our organisation, and others, to thrive post-pandemic.
Join us on Friday March 18 to celebrate My Whole Self day when people across the country will be encouraged to bring their whole self to work, wherever that may be. If you’d like to take part too, you can find out more about the campaign and download free resources to help you take part at mhfaengland.org/my-whole-self.
My Whole Self aims to create healthier working cultures, built on respect and collaboration. Employers can help by driving a positive transformation in workplace mental health and performance through bringing together diversity and inclusion with health and wellbeing. One of the ways Organisations can support their teams is to share information about “self-care”.
The My-Whole Self MOT produced by Mental Health First Aid UK is a great starting point. Creating the space for reflection and supportive conversations then becomes the natural follow on.
Use March the 18th as a springboard to your revised and renewed approach to supporting your teams.
